Legendary Philippines boxer Manny Pacquiao has caused a storm following the controversial comments he made in a video that homosexuals “are worse than animals”.

Asked on his stance on same-sex marriage, Pacquiao reportedly said, “Do you see animals mating with the same sex? Animals are better because they can distinguish male from female. If men mate with men and women mate with women they are worse than animals”.

Pacquiao, who is running for a Senate seat in the May polls, took to social media to reaffirm his belief, citing the Bible but said he doesn’t condemn people in homosexual relationships, but would “rather obey the Lord’s command than obeying the desires of the flesh”.

However, following a public outcry, the 37-year-old boxer and politician has since issued an apology on various social media platforms saying. “I’m sorry for hurting people by comparing homosexuals to animals. Please forgive me for those I’ve hurt”.

Despite the apology, social media has been abuzz with some users supporting Pacquiao’s view and right to express his beliefs.

However, other social media users have said the legendary boxer was out of line, even calling for Pacquiao’s sponsors to terminate their endorsements.

Boxing icon and arch rival Floyd Mayweather Jr. told TMZ Sports, “I feel like we should stay positive and we should let people live their lives the way they want to live their lives. To each his own”.
