The ‘progressive’ paper De Morgen published the images just before Obama’s arrival in The Netherlands on Monday morning.

The images were part of a satirical article that said Obama started selling marijuana just after he was elected president. The article packaged the images as if they were sent by Russian president Vladimir Putin. It was accompanied by the words: “Vladimir Putin is the president of Russia. He sent us this attachment at our request, and chose to send pictures instead of text ‘because he doesn’t have a lot of time’.” according to The Independent.

Pics of the section have circulated online to mixed reactions. Many readers have defended De Morgen’s exercising of free speech, some have written it off as racism.

De Morgen published an apology in its Monday edition, admitting it was guilty of “bad taste”.
