Meet Second Lieutenant Thokozile Muwamba, Zambia’s first female fighter pilot

Last year, 19 year-old Besa Mumba, became Zambia’s youngest commercial pilot, an achievement which was widely celebrated across the continent. Fast-forward six months, Zambia is celebrating yet another remarkable accomplishment, as 24-year-old Second Lieutenant Thokozile Muwamba becomes the country’s first female fighter pilot. We applaud Lt Muwamba’s historic achievement.

Half of South Sudan’s children are out of school

More than half (51 percent) of children of school going age in South Sudan are not in school, a result of the incessant fighting between government forces and rebel groups. Unicef says, unless education in emergencies is prioritised, a generation of children will grow up without the necessary skills to contribute to personal and national development.
