Ugandans living near national parks are taking to a novel way to deter elephants from straying. The vuvuzela which is mostly seen at sporting events is now becoming commonplace among these communities.

Due to a shift in migration routes, elephants have been invading the villagers’ homesteads but the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has stepped in to help with the non-lethal vuvuzela method.

“Because their ears are very sensitive to noise and it gets irritated with much noise so that thing just scares them away,” remarked Ranger Moses.

The long plastic trumpet has proved effective unlike UWA’s previous method of scare-shooting or shooting AK-47’s into the air.

He added, “After using this over the years animals have got used to that sound which is produced by the A-K47”.
