“We are here at a crime scene. Of course we suspect it is a terrorist attack,” Nairobi police commander Benson Kibue told reporters.
This statement came after 3 almost simultaneous blasts in the main Somali district of Nairobi on Monday night left at least 6 people dead and 25 injured.
The three blasts targeted two small restaurants and a local clinic in a particularly densely populated area of Eastleigh, an area also known as ‘Little Mogadishu’ due to its large Somali population.
Eastleigh has in recent years been the scene of several explosions usually attributed by the police to extremists.
In a tweet, the governor of Nairobi City County Evans Kidero wrote “”Our resolve & will to defend ourselves from those who intend to harm us will never be discouraged,” the governor of Nairobi City County. Our strength lies in our national unity.”
