From November 5 to 7, 2026, Africans from across the world whose work has been focused on activism and human rights defense will be gathering in Maputo to participate in the 3rd All-African Movements Assembly. The Assembly, which was previously hosted in Arusha, Tanzania and Accra, Ghana, has become the biggest biennial gathering for frontline activists, grassroots organisers, journalists, artists, trade unionists, civil society members, and policymakers who come together to forge and plan for a united Africa.
Hosted on the theme, “United Africa: The Future We Want,” the gathering will be centred on the challenges the continent is going through and why Africans are needed in this crucial time to push for a united Africa to help curb the issues the continent faces relating to political instability, economic challenges, climate change, and shrinking civic spaces across the continent.
Speaking on the significance of this gathering, Lucky Nimsiima, Co-Chair of the Africans Rising Coordinating Collective, stated that,
“An injury to one African is an injury to us all, and our march towards a fully integrated, borderless continent free from colonial barriers is unstoppable. Africa is bleeding. She is navigating a deeply difficult moment where corrupt systems, rigged elections, and internet shutdowns are systematically weaponized to silence the will of her citizens. Nevertheless, true authority belongs to the people. We are converging in Maputo not to complain about these structural inequalities simply, but to build real, alternative systems powered by the audacity of the youth, women, and every African.”
The 2026 All-African Movements Assembly will focus its attention on several topics which will engage participants in their expertise on Borderless Africa, Climate & Ecological Justice, African Solidarity, Gender Justice, and Reparations. It will also feature multiple activities, including performances, keynote speeches, exhibitions, presentations, and the launch of the 10- Year Impact Report of Africa Liberation Week and the 10th anniversary launch of Africans Rising, which was started in 2017.
Some leading personalities who will be present at this gathering include Kumi Naidoo, Lamin Saidykhan, Coumba Toure, Andrew Karamagi, Ken Choomba, Madi Jobarteh, Hardi Yakubu, Vanessa Thomas, Wilson Chivhanga, Mutemi Kiama and Briggs Bomba.
