Disciplinary action has reportedly been taken against two students at South Africa’s University of Pretoria who were photographed in ‘blackface’, according to News24.
“The investigation began yesterday [Tuesday],” UP spokesperson Nicolize Mulder said on Wednesday.
The photo, believed to have been taken at at 21st birthday party, has gone viral on social networks and met with much disdain from many users.
The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) said it was not investigating the matter as, at the time of the report, it had not received a complaint about it.
“We didn’t receive a complaint in this matter, we just learnt about it in the media,” said SAHRC spokesperson Isaac Mangena.
The image was published in a number of South Africa’s newspapers on Wednesday.
Black girls don't bleach to tease white people, stop comparing the two, it is just distasteful. #BlackFace
