Musiiro, Mozambique’s white face mask
Musiiro is a traditional natural face musk used to prevent acne, protect from the sun and to keep skin smooth.
Wearing mussiro is common practice among the Makua people in northern Mozambique. The cream comes from the Olax dissitiflora plant.
Mussiro used to represent a girl’s virgin status. Traditionally the girl would stopped wearing it when she fell in love and got married. Nowadays it is used for medicinal and beautification purposes. The ‘afro paste’ has even graced the Mozambique Fashion Week stage.
