The EU aims to green its economy and to become climate-neutral by 2050. However, for this to be achieved, EU countries will need access to raw materials and metals, needed to transform their economies. The series of actions the EU has taken to achieve this, in particular the Critical Raw Materials Act, will only serve to maintain extractivist models of production rooted in colonial times. In the context of competition with Russia, China and the US, the European Union is using trade agreements to secure supply of critical raw materials for its green transition, but Global South countries are not powerless against this attempt at another wave of resource colonialism.
