It’s no secret that the black hair business industry is booming around the world. And the creators of a trendy new app called Tress, are helping African women benefit from this growing market. Tress is the brainchild of Priscilla Hazel, Esther Olatunde and Cassandra Sarfo from Ghana and Nigeria.
This hair care app provides a platform where mostly black women can discover new hairstyles, share ideas as well as find great stylists and products.
The app was officially launched in February and is currently being piloted in Nigeria, Africa’s largest beauty market. Tress not only gives you the location of the nearest stylist, it also shows you photos of their previous work.
Why Tress?

What began as a school project, is now becoming the talking point in the hair and beauty industry. On their site, the app creators say their name is based on the expression “Love your tresses” which they often use when complimenting a friend’s hairstyle.
“We settled on Tress because it evoked happiness, love, positivity, beauty and quite frankly, because it means braids in French and a lock or strand of hair in English…We built Tress with a lot of love and consideration, because ladies always have questions about beautiful hairstyles,” they said.
