Last year made it the fourth time in five years that the 8 year-old Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership go without a leader selected as winner.
The $5m award – the world’s most valuable individual award – is given to an elected African head of state who ruled well, improved his people’s living standards and left office.
The 79-year old Pohamba was a former rebel leader who fought for Namibia’s independence and has now served his two terms as president. He is going to be succeeded by President-elect, Hage Geingob.
Pohamba was announced as winner of the prize at a ceremony held in Nairobi, Kenya.
As winner, he will be entitled to the $5m prize spread over 10 years, followed by $200,000 a year for life.
