West Africa’s soaring mortality rates

Nowhere else in the world is maternal mortality and the low use of contraceptive higher than in West Africa, says Malian Dr. Cheick Touré who is also diretor of IntraHealth – Mali.

Dr. Touré blamed the two factors on “very low” funding on family planning and which is why a three nation conference that ended Tuesday was held to upturn the phenomenon, AllAfrica.com quotes local media.

According to Dr Touré, this meeting is primarily meant to develop common reflections on the vision and roadmap to serve as a policy framework and action interventions  in the repositioning of the Family Planning in Francophone West Africa.

Besides the concerned countries : Benin, Senegal and Mali, others attending the conference in Cotonou include USAID, UNFPA, IntraHealth, One World as well as local and international civil society organisations.
