Police investigate Twitter racism on Mario Balotelli
The police are investigating the racist abuse encountered by Mario Balotelli on Sunday afternoon after the striker posted a tweet mocking Manchester United’s plight
In a statement Merseyside Police said: ‘We can confirm officers are looking into offensive comments made on Twitter about Mario Balotelli earlier today.’
Balotelli posted “Man Utd…LOL” on the social media site just minutes after the final whistle had sounded on Manchester United’s crushing defeat at the King Power Stadium.
His tweet was met by a string of racist messages, including one from an account called @CraigSainsbury which read: ‘F*** you Mario you f****** n*****. Got eat some bananas and get ebola you dirty monkey.’
The account in question appears to have been closed but screenshots of the offensive comments have circulated throughout social media. He faced similar racial abuse during his tenures at Inter Milan and, later, at AC Milan.
‘They aren’t used to seeing people who are different, not white, who act not as rebels but normally,’ he told GQ magazine during an interview.
Anti-racism campaigners announced yesterday that they’d be reporting the incident/s to the authorities.
Kick It Out is aware of racist tweets directed @FinallyMario and will be reporting to the authorities. Thanks to all who have alerted us.
