Sembene! documentary showing at Sundance Film Festival

The annual Sundance Film Festival in Park City, US, is the world’s largest independent film festival. This year, the festival is screening two African films, the first one being a documentary about the ‘the father of African cinema’, Ousmane Sembene

Co-directed by Samba Gadjigo, Ousmane Sembene’s mentee and official biographer and Jason Silverman, Sembene! illuminates the auteur’s radical personal transformation from being a primary school dropout and dockworker in Senegal, to being a doyen of African film and literature. The man who made classics such as Xala, Black Girl, and Moolaade, Sembene became an international emissary and presented the inner lives of his people on film.

The feature-length HD documentary explores the self-taught novelist’s extraordinary life, how he conquered insurmountable adversity and his passion for sharing his films with other Africans.

Gadjigo tells Sembene’s story using rare archival footage and over 100 hours of exclusive materials.

The film will be showing at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, USA, until Friday the 30th. Check out the trailer below.
