Celebrities join ‘I Love my Natural Skintone’ campaign

Ama K Abebrese, actress and TV personality, has teamed up with others public figures in the ‘I Love my Natural Skintone’ campaign. Musician and actress Paulina Oduro, actress Nana Ama McBrown and model Hamamat Montia are also part of the campaign, which  Abebrese says, “is not about pointing fingers as to who has bleached or has not bleached their skin”.

The campaign aims to encourage Ghanaians to love their natural skin tone, resist skin bleaching and “to highlight the risks and dangers of using different chemicals, lotions pills etc that are associated with decreasing the melanin in the skin by bleaching,” Ghanaweb reports.

The campaign involves social media updates under the hashtag #SayNoToSkinBleaching and public discussions on the issue, with one discussion having already taken place last weekend at University of Cape Coast.

Skin lightening is, undoubtedly, one of the most controversial topics of discussion. It remains prevalent across Africa despite the health risks associated with it. Women and sometimes men have been known to use harmful non-prescription skin-lightening creams in the quest for “beauty”.
