About 112 migrants have died after a boat carrying Ethiopians and Somalians sank off the coast of Somaliland last week, according to reports.
The accident occurred after the boat experienced technical problems officials said.
“The coast guard rescued 75 people and local residents spotted 112 bodies,” that were washed ashore, regional health department official Abdurahman Yasin was quoted saying.
Three crew members were arrested trying to flee from the scene of the accident and they will be questioned by authorities, according to Ahmed Abdi Falay, governor of Sanag region.
Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia have witnessed a surge in citizens fleeing from conflict and economic hardships in search of better living conditions.
However, the journey in search of better opportunities is risky as migrants face untold challenges and suffering. The migrants often risk their lives in overcrowded and unsafe vessels.
