Cartoon| Mwai Kibaki leaves behind a complicated legacy

Mwai Kibaki, Kenya’s third president, born November 15, 1931, leaves behind a complex legacy. Kibaki served as president of Kenya between 2002 and 2013, and he will be remembered amongst the biggest and most important names in Kenyan politics.

Mwai Kibaki, who has died at the age of 90 spent a lifetime in public service. To his supporters Kibaki was a brilliant politician, a gentleman who steered Kenya’s economy to dizzy heights. His critics though point to a chequered legacy, marked by state violence and his lust for power that almost destroyed Kenya.

President Uhuru Kenyatta paid tribute to Kibaki as “the gentleman of Kenyan politics”. 

As Kenyans mourn Kibaki, how the former president will be remembered will continue to be a matter of public debate.
