Omo The White Giraffe: Tanzania

Meet Omo! She is a 15 month old giraffe. She was found in Tarangire National Park in Tanzania.

Omo the white giraffe looks like she has bleached skin because she has a skin condition called leucism. It results from partial loss of pigmentation. Unlike albinism, it is caused by a reduction in multiple types of pigment, not just melanin. According to Dr Derek Lee founder and scientist at the Wild Nature Institute, “Omo appears to get along with the other giraffes…they don’t seem to mind her different colouring.” Special efforts are being made for giraffe conservation and anti-poaching to help Omo and other giraffes survive.
