Africa might not be changing its role in the world anytime soon if its young people are not at the centre of the continent’s development agenda. While China plays a vital role in developing Africa’s economy, the imbalances in trade are worrying, and the continent is still playing the role of a dumping ground.

President Paul Kagame was recently elected the new Chairperson of the African Union. In his acceptance speech President Kagame emphasised African unity and integration as fundamental elements for building Africa’s wealth. “Our people deserve a brighter future. Their sacrifice and hard work should be rewarded with better lives for families and communities,” President Kagame said.
American President Donald Trump officially recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. This places his country on the opposite side of the issue from virtually the entire international community, including the African Union and Ethiopia.
The Organisation of the African Unity (OAU) founding fathers gallery is hard to miss immediately upon entering the African Union complex in Addis Ababa. The gallery includes portraits of 38 heads of states. The OAU was founded by 32 countries. 23 countries have joined the Africa Union over the years which replaced the OAU in 2001.
The African Union Commission Chairperson H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat had a message for Kenyans following the historic Supreme Court ruling. Mahamat expressed satisfaction at the process in which the electoral crisis was resolved through the Kenyan courts.
Zimbabwe’s president, Robert Mugabe, has donated 300 cows to raise money for the Africa Union (AU) Foundation to help stop dependance on foreign aid funding. President Mugabe handed a $1 million cheque to the AU after the cattle were sold in Zimbabwe. The cheque was handed to the AU at its leaders’ summit in Ethiopia and Pres Mugabe said his friends helped contribute to the noble cause.
