This week we congratulate and celebrate the historic achievements of South African athletes Wayde van Niekerk who was crowned sportsman of the year and Caster Semenya who clinched the sportswoman of the year award at the 11th annual SA Sports Awards on Sunday.
van Niekerk who this month also named the Best Male Athlete of Rio 2016 games by the Association of National Olympic Committees has had a remarkable year. The sprinter etched his name into the history books after smashing the 400m world record at the Rio Olympics, setting a new time of 43.03 seconds, beating the previous record of 43.18 seconds that had been held by U.S. sprinter Michael Johnson for 17 years.
