Malawi army to grow presence as unhappy voters torch house

According to the report, voters said they had been waiting too long for the polling station to open and were annoyed that they were unable to exercise their right to vote.

Police said no arrests have been made in connection with the torching that razed election material, ballot boxes, chairs and stationery.

Malawi Electoral Commission chairperson Maxon Mbendera informed a news briefing that they are calling on the Malawi Defence Force to assist the police in maintaining order.

Mbendera said the MEC has been monitoring all polling stations in Malawi and it was addressing a few hiccups in other regions where polling was delayed.

Voting began today in the southern African country where the elections have been said to be hotly contested between 3 major political parties, one of which – the People’s Party (PP) – seeks to elect current president Joyce Banda for a second term in the top office.
