Fred OberaWhen eight year-old Nia Mya Reese from Alabama in the U.S. was tasked by her teacher to do her first grade assignment, writing about something she was an expert at, she thought about her five year old brother’s annoyance. She told her teacher that she is an expert at dealing with and taking care of her annoying little brother.
Nia knew she had to write a book to complete the assignment, and her pet project was “How to Deal with and Care for Your Annoying Little Brother”.
Mya’s name has made headlines from a simple pet writing project, which turned into the world best selling book, on dealing with her annoying little brother. The book has become a number one bestseller on the Amazon sibling-relationships list for good parenting.
It has taken many authors decades to achieve the bestseller status, but Nia joined the best sellers’ club in just months, and at such a young age, a mammoth achievement.
During an interview with CBS News, Nia spoke about how she hopes the book will help many children overcome difficult situations dealing with little brothers especially when they are playing together in the absence of parents.
“He will throw the ball and the ball will just goes flying everywhere. And it sometimes hits me. He won’t always listen. But my favourite method of dealing with my brother, is teaching him. I make it a game because my brother likes to play games,” she told CBS News.
Mother to daughter encouragement
Encouraging children to become successful is not an easy task, but Cherinita Reese, Nia’s mother inspired her daughter to become a published world bestselling author, where many professional writers with years of experience and exposure have failed.
Cherinita inspired her young daughter to proceed with the creative writing project. The young writer would write the manuscript and read to her mother, and edit the story, and that’s how she developed her writing talent.

The book offers extraordinary lessons for children, parents and teachers. It includes Nia’s thoughts on how a big sister can teach her little brother to be patient, loving, caring, kind, and respectful.
“I love having this book as part of my classroom library! All of my students are African American and finding texts that they relate to is a primary focus of mine. The fact that this book was written by a girl their age was eye opening for so many of them. They were able to see that, even at a young age, you can achieve your goals and dreams. Excellent job on an adorably cute book, Nia Mya!” Christal Sheets, a teacher commented on the book on Amazon website.
At school, Nia is now an inspiration to other learners, and she’s a household name owing to the success of her book project.
Congratulatory messages continue to be posted on social media on Nia’s remarkable achievement.
