Nairobi to host Music In Africa conference for collaboration and exchange
Music In Africa Conference for Collaborations, Exchange and Showcases (ACCES) is a pan-African event for music industry players to exchange ideas, discover new talent and create business linkages. This year’s keynote speaker is Kenyan musician Eric Wainaina.
The long awaited 2018 edition of the Music In Africa Conference for Collaborations, Exchange and Showcases (ACCES) draws nearer with a series of outlined programmes with focus on royalty collection challenges in Africa, the continent’s music streaming economy, distribution models and new technologies. The event will take place from the 15th to the 17th of November, with attendees from over 50 countries expected to participate.
Kenyan musician Eric Wainaina whose hit song on corruption, Nchi ya Kitu Kidogo from his 2001 album Sawa Sawa, will be the ACCES 2018 keynote speaker. Last year’s keynote speaker was Senegalese musician Baaba Maal. ACCES is regarded as one of the most comprehensive and informative gatherings on the African music calendar.
The educational aspect of music will be covered in the training sessions on music production, film music and digital strategies. Coke Studio Africa will join “the conference in support of a mutual goal to promote pan-African collaborations.” A panel discussion titled Africa’s booming streaming economy- opportunities and challenges, will be discussed by representatives from leading streaming platforms such as Mdundo and Spinlet.

ACCES is a pan-African event for music industry players to exchange ideas, discover new talent and create business linkages. ACCES is held in a different African city every year, attracting active music industry players from across the globe.
Rikki Stein, Fela Kuti’s long time artist manager will talk about the artist management space and how it has changed over the years. According to the organisers “Education itself will be discussed at ACCES 2018 through a panel titled Music Education in Africa and Africa in Music Education. This captivating subject – starring International Music Council president Prof Emily Achieng’ Akuno, Sauti Academy founder Natalie Lukkenaer and other prominent educators in Africa – will examine the state of music education on the continent while evaluating African identity in the expression of musical creativity within institutions of learning.” The programme will also feature 80 individual musicians from across the continent.
