José Eduardo dos Santos is the latest African leader to die overseas, following a long line of African leaders who have sought emergency and secret medical treatment in foreign hospitals. Most African citizens can only dream of such privilege.
Cases of African leaders receiving treatment overseas have stirred debate around medical tourism. Health care systems in many African countries are inadequately funded. There are arguments that African leaders need to lead by example, and ensure that healthcare systems in their countries improve to match or surpass the foreign countries they so much love to visit.
