Kenya’s Supreme Court recently blocked President Uhuru Kenyatta’s controversial and widely criticised bid to make sweeping constitutional changes through the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).
Critics and opponents had argued that the proposed changes were an attempt to widen his powers. One of its key proposals was the introduction of a new post of prime minister, and many believed Kenyatta was angling for this role should his new ally Raila Odinga who favours the amendments win the presidency.
Kenyatta’s estranged deputy and presidential candidate William Ruto opposed the changes.
