Egypt’s parliament approved constitutional amendments that could extend President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s stay in power until 2030. The amendment will have to be endorsed in a referendum.
The 596-member parliament voted 531 to 22 in support of the amendments.
These amendments have been widely criticised as a step backwards for democracy by critics of the Egyptian president. Sisi’s government has been widely condemned by human rights groups for the repression of political opponents.
A former Minister of Defence, his government has been heavily criticised for giving the Egyptian military unchecked power, with media reports labelling Sisi a dictator, with similar repressive tactics to Egypt’s former dictators.
