Today Tanzania observes Nyerere Day, commemorating the death of the founding leader, and one of Africa’s most respected nationalists, Julius Kambarge Nyerere who died today in 1999, aged 77.

Widely known by the Swahili honorific title ‘Mwalimu’ – ‘Teacher’ Julius Nyerere is a true son of Africa, a Pan-Africanist, nationalist, charismatic orator, thinker and African statesman. A proponent of African unity, Mwalimu was also a founding member of the Organisation of African Unity.

He campaigned and led an anti-colonial movement fighting for independence.

Under Nyerere’s leadership Tanzania enjoyed political stability and his government  implemented an economic programme influenced by African socialist ideas. Nyerere’s government did much to foster social development in Tanzania during its time in office.

Nyerere stepped down as president in 1985 and was succeeded by Ali Hassan Mwinyi, but he remained resolute in speaking on fundamental issues on corruption, poverty, social development and social justice issues.

During his lifetime, Nyerere inspired the world with his great leadership, and dedication to the fight against poverty.

Today Tanzania commemorates the legacies of Mwalimu Nyerere. We remember Nyerere and pay homage to this African hero.
