Greetings from Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa and the tallest freestanding mountain on earth. It has three volcanic cones, “Kibo”, “Mawenzi”, and “Shira”. The mountain has been the subject of many scientific studies because of its shrinking glaciers. According to LiveScience, it is not really a mountain but a giant stratovolcano that began forming about a million years ago and is composed of many layers of hardened volcanic ash, lava, pumice and tephra — fragmental material that is the fallout from a volcanic eruption.
Here are some lovely pictures from the tourist attraction, which according to Tanzania National Parks, attracts 50,000 climbers a year.
