Ruins of a port city called Suakin, Sudan

Suakin used to be a wealthy port that buzzed with trade and culture. It was a key harbour on the Red Sea for powerful empires during its time.

Suakin is located in the north-eastern part of Sudan. The buildings were constructed with coral and decorated with wood and stone.

There are efforts to restore the port’s infrastructure, reportedly with the help of a Turkish company, in order to boost tourism and preserve the heritage buildings. The coast offers diving posts for marine enthusiasts.
