Cellphone app taxi service, Uber, is widening its tyre print in Africa by introducing its service in Nairobi, Kenya this week.
The controversial service is offering complimentary rides in the city during the promotional Nairobi Restaurant Week.
The US-based company is offering Uber app users a discount of Sh2000 (US$22) for two rides during the 10-day event which starts tomorrow. This promotion is the precursor to Nairobi’s Uber taxi service office launch next month.
According to the company, 30 cars are so far registered with Uber to serve Nairobi.
The service has, since its inception, caused debate in some of the cities where it operates. Taxi operators have gone on strike over competition quarrels and questions have been raised over the condition over the cars and ability of the drivers. According to a News24 report, 65 Uber cars have been impounded in Cape Town. Concerns have also been raised relating to its surge pricing policy.
